Description:
For the past ten years, the Office of Multilingual Learning (formerly known as English Language Learner Department) of the Saint Paul Public Schools has delivered EL service to elementary students through a model of instructional collaboration. The instructional collaboration model pairs a general education teacher and an EL teaching specialist for an instructional period. Co-teaching (the focus of this DVD) is the most visible aspect of collaboration. We define co-teaching as two teachers working together in the planning, delivery, and assessment of instruction. Different models of co-teaching are discussed and teachers and administrators provide testimonials and discussion about the benefits of each model. Many of the classrooms featured in the DVD include a large population of newcomer students and are part of our Language Academy program. In the Language Academy classrooms, newcomer EL students learn side-by-side with English-speaking peers. Teachers provide scaffolded instruction to help all students work toward meeting grade-level content standards. Who might use this DVD? District and school leaders, literacy coaches, teacher teams --anyone wanting to know more about how two teachers can work together in the classroom.
